Blake Morgan
Recording Artist and Producer

Engine Company Records Website
Blake Morgan's work as a recording artist and producer has paired him
with Lenny Kravitz, Phil Ramone, Terry Manning, and Phil "Butcher
Bros." Nicolo to name a few. His work has taken him from The Hit
Factory in New York to Sound City in Los Angeles, from Compass Point
Studios in the Bahamas to Studio 4 in Philadelphia. In 1997 he signed
a multi-record deal with Phil Ramone’s N2K label for his own solo
career.
In 1999, he decided to build his own studio in his native New York,
both for his own music and for other recording
artists. Based primarily on the sound quality
of the unit and its effects, Blake designed his whole studio around
the VS-2480 with only a couple of pieces of peripheral gear. The result
has been both productive and profitable. Unlike most labels, Engine
Company Records gives its artists the overwhelming balance
of profits from their own album sales and
they also continue to own all of their music and recordings.
With Morgan as the producer and these emerging
musicians at its heart, Engine Company
Records is fast becoming one of the most successful independent record
labels anywhere. His latest project has been writing and producing
a solo record titled “Burning
Sunlight”.
Blake on his recording process
"The VS-2480 combines the things I like about
digital recording with the things I love
about analog recording. I need faders, I
need buttons, I need to feel I can directly interact with the music
I’m making. The interface
of the VS-2480 is terrific for this. The
VS-2480 is the core of my studio and really enables me to do what I
do now with my record company. I take it everywhere, to record drums
or live concerts or to mix. I have yet to ask it to do something that
it can’t do. Most importantly
it sounds great. There is no other DAW that
comes close to sounding as good as the 2480, and I’ve tried them
all. In particular that really popular computer program is the most
god-awful sounding medium ever built to make music! The VS gives me
a different palette and helps my music sound unique. I can’t tell
you how many times people have heard my projects and were shocked that
I did it all in the VS!"
Must-Have Features
"Believe it or not, the faders are probably
my most favorite feature. They give me
a direct contact with the tracks I’m mixing and allow me to
get a more human feel for my mixes. Another
feature I have used is the Real Time Analyzer, which I used to help
match the tonal characteristics of a studio mic to the original
live tracks when I was touching up some vocals originally cut live.
I’ve also
used the pitch shifter in the vocal multis
to real-time correct the pitch of a toy piano track as it was being
played."
